OLDEST POST OFFICE OPENS WHEN STATE STILL A TERRITORY ?? LEESBURG COMMERCIAL, 28 Feb 1988

Okahumpka, Lake County's oldest post office, was established Jan. 2, 1845, when Florida was still a territory.

Florida became a state March 3, 1845, when President John Tyler, on the last day of his administration, signed into law a bill granting statehood to Florida and Iowa.

But Okahumpka, a trading post on tbe stage line between Ocala and Tampa, would have a name change in 1852, to Adamsville, and another, back to Okahumpka in 1884.

The briefest post office was assigned to a town named Boscobel, location unknown. The office was established Sept. 18, 1889, and discontinued Oct. 26, 1889, five weeks later.

This is a listing of Lake County post offices taken from a statewide list compiled by Alford O. Bradbury and E. Story Hallock from U.S.Postal Bulletins with information.
